Welcome to the
Developmentalist
As the founder of this program, I would like to welcome you to seeing things
through the eyes of a developmentalist.
Most people will not be familiar with this term, and let me
define for you what I think it is:
Developmentalist: a person who understands that our behavior
is a reflection of our development, and that over time we
have the inborn potential to develop as we mature, through
experience, as well as through the scaffolding and support
of others around us.
And while behavior is important, what's
beyond the behavior is critical to often unpack and unwind
it for reflection, understanding and experimentation. Most
of the time, we are unable to do this on our own.
Therefore,
a person who is learning the tools of adult development can
often guide us through this developmentalist process, as we
become more and more able ourselves to guide our own
development and our understanding of our behavior over time.
Notice, that in my definition that I show you that we can
become a developmentalist using ourselves as the canvas to
paint our own development. I think many have discussed this
idea in the past, but as I work more and more as a
developmentalist, I realize that I need to become part of
the solution and not just rely on others to guide my
development.
What I have discovered after more than 25 years of coaching
other's in development, is at the point where the person
reaches a place where they have learned some of the ideas
surrounding development, which I present in my
introductory class, it becomes a self-organizing system
which can be catalyzed by the sometimes use of a guru,
guide, coach, mentor, confidant, trusted advisor, or all of
the above. But what is actually at the crux of the
developmentalist, is our own ambition for development, and
our taking responsibility and accountability for our
development over time.
I know this might seem like a play on words, or the work of
a theoretician, but actually development is done in the
trenches.
Our most difficult moments, our highs and lows and much of
what goes in-between are all important to the
developmentalist. But something that rides over all of this
is the willingness you have and share about optimizing your
experience in a way that poses the questions that you need
to answer.
We have been cajoled in our modern day society to think that
we need to spend inordinate amounts of time and money on
hiring people to help us "change, grow, fix, learn, modify,
and re-make ourselves" and most of this is just wasted
motion because we didn't really understand who we are in the
first place.
Without this unfolding understanding, this grasp of who we
are, as we have come into this work, it's really difficult
for us to know what is what, and that to me, is where the
developmentalist begins.
In this four session program, I will walk you through the
developmentalist and some of the tools that you can begin to
use for your own lifelong journey.
Sure, I can show you how with my scaffolding and guidance
you can make the leaps and bounds possible, but more than
that, I want to show you that opening the door to adult
development for you and the self-knowledge work available to
you, which you can do on your own, as you prepare yourself
to take advantage of those guru-like, or coach-inspired, or
guided experiences you will need to chalk up along the way,
is the first step in freeing you from what has you.
And what has you, may not have me, but we're all being had
by the inbornness that we inherited and unlike the blank
slate, we are not just written upon by our environments and
those powerful who-said's around us, but we have specific,
inborn filters for our experience, our likes, dislikes and
even what we can see and hear easily.
It only takes one trip to the perspective room, to see that
some see the old woman and others see the young woman and
some see both, and some nothing at all ... to help us
understand that we clearly see and experience the world
differently as a result of who we are, not what we have
lived.
Now, the developmentalist program is not a class of tricks
and illusions, but a map that I unfold for you which can
give you some basic tools with which to continue the journey
you have embarked upon at your birth.
All of us are developing, all of us are doing it without
thinking, it is part of our birthright, to develop, to grow,
to learn and to mature. In the past 100 years of academic
science, a larger and larger group of teachers, scientists
and helpers have begun to dig into development and to ask
the questions, and create the inquiry into adult
development.
Many giants in the field have left huge legacies on which
many of us have feasted and grown full of ideas about how to
create the experience of development in a way that provided
the benefits each person desires from their own benefits.
For the past 7 years I've been writing a book about how we
can understand what makes us happy and what we need to be
successful and how our own individual development and
understanding of that process can actually fill in the gaps
very nicely between happiness and success, so much so, that
I can give you a prime example to think about in your own
daily living.
As I do my own work each and everyday, including writing to
you here, I have things I dread, and I have things that I
just love to do. In fact, writing to you now, is such a
pleasure, but it took me some time to reach this state ... and
because I knew that I could do this without thinking,
really ... that it would just flow out of me, once I set the
proper stage ... it is doing exactly that ... good or bad, you
can judge.
Yet, here's my point.
Because I'm able to give you this example about FLOW, it
shows that I know what FLOW is for me, and how I can
actually set it up, so I can find it easily, even when
'having' to do the work of our daily bread-making.
As a developmentalist, I know about myself, and I also have
this idea which I have learned about my own being, having,
doing, and becoming, that if I design my life and experiences
with an eye towards my developmental goals, that FLOW
appears a lot more often and dread is almost always designed
away. Even when it means you BE, DO, HAVE, and BECOME in
less than desirable settings, or jobs, there is always a way
to tweak things in such a way as to put you in the best
light, the best place, the best case, and a better position
from which to do that work.
As a developmentalist, I realize that I and my life are full
of challenges and opportunities.
Because I spend time learning about myself, and
understanding my behavior in a developmental context, I have
a lot of tools at my disposal to help me design FLOW every
day.
One of my favorite preachers is Robert Schuller. His story
is amazing and these days I often remember things that he is
famous for saying like, "Tough Times Don't Last, Tough
People DO." Yet, I wonder often if we can't use his idea to
see that while most of our lives are already having
us ... that often we get the opportunity to position the
little things in such a way as to reduce conflict, improve
well-being, and to literally design FLOW directly into our
everyday experiences.
And while Schuller's remarks are helpful, what if we could
say something like ... "I'm in control of hardly anything, but
I'm aware of how I reach FLOW experiences everyday, and that
is a life worth living."
Reaching a point where you can begin to become aware of who
you are and how you learn, manage conflict, prefer to make
decisions, and what motives you are all keys, yet watching
your behavior in the interchange of daily living, is clearly
a lens worth making.
The lens of development is ground easily with the tools I
can show you in this short program, perhaps the timing is
right for you.
If so, our proposition is quite simple:
1) Register for our program.
2) Attend either live or asynchronously at your convenience.
3) If you can't put the program to use as fast as you like,
join us for our group work, or send us an email, saying you
would like to talk about a way for us to help you catalyze
your development.
4), If you want to learn to do this work, we have a great
crucible for you, one that you will never forget, or forget
you, we'll give instructions for this in the program.
